On Saturday Sept 26th, the Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association held its annual Pickle Festival at the historic Gardiner Farm.
The Gardiner Farm is a working farm which is supported by the association's fund raisers. The historic Suydam House, in Centerport, is another property that the association manages.
Many buckets of pickles were sold, with additional pickles by
a local Long Island pickle company.
There were jars of pickle products from an Pennsylvania Amish company,
home baked cakes and cookies,
Gardiner farm grown produce,
a steam engine,
a tractor, but the best thing was
farmer Tony demonstrating the potato digging machine.
The potatoes flew out the back of the digger to the delight of the children.
The vintage attachment is kept in fine working order by farmer Tony, and is characteristic of the potato diggers that were in common use all over Long Island. Long Island potatoes were known and shipped all over the country.
Chilren ran out to the potato rows and gathered bags of freshly dug Long Island potatoes. Probably this was the first time any of the festival goers had seen a potato digger in action.
Kids found their way through a corn maze, and took free hay rides on a vintage cart and tractor.

Pickles and baked spuds would be a a great supper
with a little bit of cheese on the side....
What a fantastic day, and so much to do. I would have loved to have visited. I like your photos of such a fun-packed outing. x
